Rubber Timing Belt Maintenance Tips: Proper Lubrication for Longer Durability

Rubber timing belts are like the belts in a car—using the right method can extend their lifespan by several years, while using the wrong method may render them useless in just a few months. Today, we’ll discuss how to properly maintain this “transmission powerhouse.”

First, let’s discuss how to lubricate rubber timing belts. The only part that needs lubrication is the pulley bearing—the belt itself must never, under any circumstances, be lubricated! Do not apply oil! Rubber exposed to grease will swell and deform like soaked seaweed. If the timing belt makes a squeaking noise, you can use a specialized rubber maintenance spray (make sure it does not contain silicone oil). After spraying, wipe off any excess liquid to prevent dust accumulation. You can also apply a thin layer of rust-preventive wax to the metal pulley contact surfaces, but avoid contact with the rubber belt teeth.

Maintenance in this area is a weekly must. Use a flashlight to inspect the belt teeth; if you find fine cracks, it’s like discovering a bulge in a tire—it’s time to prepare for a replacement. Feel the belt body; if it’s hard like a plastic plate, it’s aged. Every month, wipe the pulley grooves with a white paper; if they’re black with rubber powder, it indicates severe belt slippage, and it’s time to adjust the tension. Every season, we can remove the timing belt and inspect it under light. If it is translucent or has wavy deformation, replace it immediately without hesitation.

Remember the mantra: “Rubber doesn't need oil, inspection relies on touch and sight, investigate unusual noises immediately, don't let small issues escalate into major problems.” A well-maintained timing belt can transmit two to three times more power than one used carelessly!
