Storing polypropylene (PP) plastic pellets properly is essential to maintain their quality and prevent contamination or degradation. Here’s a guide to best practices for storing polypropylene pellets:
1. Use Proper Storage Containers
Sealed containers or silos: Use airtight containers or dedicated silos to keep out moisture, dust, and other contaminants.
Material: Use containers made of metal or food-grade plastic to avoid chemical reactions.
Bulk Bags: If using bags (like FIBC or super sacks), make sure they are sealed and stored off the ground.
2. Control Moisture
Polypropylene is hydrophobic but still susceptible to surface moisture, which can affect processing.
Store in a dry environment with humidity control (<50% RH ideally).
Use desiccant packs or a dry room for more sensitive applications (e.g., medical or food-grade PP).
3. Temperature Management
Avoid extreme heat: Keep storage temperature below 40°C (104°F). High heat can degrade the polymer over time.
Avoid freezing: Not harmful to the polymer, but can introduce condensation when warming back up.
4. Avoid Sunlight/UV Exposure
Keep away from direct sunlight: UV can degrade PP over time, causing embrittlement and color changes.
Use opaque containers or store in shaded/covered areas.
5. Prevent Contamination
Keep away from chemicals, oils, and other polymers to prevent cross-contamination.
Use dedicated storage for different grades or colors of PP.
Maintain clean floors and workspaces.
6. FIFO Inventory Rotation
Follow First-In-First-Out (FIFO) to prevent aging of materials.
Label batches clearly with manufacture date and grade/type.
7. Pallet Storage
Store bags/containers on pallets to avoid contact with the ground.
Use shrink wrap or covers to prevent dust and moisture infiltration.
8. Fire Safety
Polypropylene is flammable:
Store away from open flames and heat sources.
Follow local fire codes for plastic storage.
